CandleLight Memorial Service

On Sunday Dec. 14/03 the
Caledonia Presbyterian Church celebrated its 2nd Annual Candlelight Memorial Service. Invitations were sent to Congregations of all denominations with a delightful response from a few. For those who were unable to attend, a brief description of what took place is as follows.....
The evening began with a
soft Christmas Prelude played on the organ by Mrs. Luella Albin, organist at Caledonia Presbyterian. Rev. Tom Vais welcomed all who were in attendance then proceeded with the Call to Worship. We then sang Hark! the herald angels sing. With the introduction to the evenings service Rev. Vais explained that we normally light the four candles on the advent wreath on the
four Sundays preceeding Christmas and we light the fifth candle, the Christ candle on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. He continued by saying that we would be lighting all five candles to symbolize the different feelings we have when dealing with the loss of a loved one.
We use the advent wreath
because it includes many symbols. The wreath is in the shape of a circle, without beginning or ending. This reminds us that there is no beginning and no ending to God, and His love and care for us never ends. The evergreen branches are a sign of ever-new life. The candles are white, the colour of peace, and tell of us the light which came into the world with Jesus Christ.
Just picture it. At the front
of the Sanctuary there was a display of 79 Candles, 1 large, 4 medium and 74 small, waiting to be lit. Rev. Vais continued the service by reading and lighting the first of 5 passages chosen for the evening. As each person read their piece they then proceeded down the steps to light the appropriate candle.
Following the lighting of
the 5 candles Rev. Vais invited Marg Thompson to the pulpit who
